Departments and Centers

Attapulgus Research and Education Center

Located in the deep southwestern corner of Georgia, the Attapulgus Research and Education Center is a unique place for UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences researchers to conduct studies in a controlled atmosphere to help farmers economically and environmentally deal with challenges and to screen new crop varieties with pest resistance. Farmers in this region grow many crops. The research here reflects that diversity. Researchers and staff work with peanuts, corn, cotton, soybeans, peaches, peppers, squash, sweet corn, snap bean and watermelons.

Bamboo Farm and Coastal Gardens

The Bamboo Farm and Coastal Gardens in Savannah provides education in horticultural and environmental sciences to the citizens of coastal Georgia through plant exhibits and demonstrations.

Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development

A unit of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences that combines the missions of research and extension, the Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development has three major objectives:

  1. Provide feasibility and marketing services,
  2. Provide agricultural and demographic data for private and public decision makers, and
  3. Conduct analysis related to policy issues in Georgia agriculture and provide that information to relevant decision makers.

Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health

The Center for Invasive Species & Ecosystem Health, located on the UGA Tifton Campus, addresses issues with invasive species, forest health, natural resources, and agricultural management through technology development, program implementation, training, applied research, and public awareness.

Center for Urban Agriculture

The Georgia Center for Urban Agriculture, located on the UGA Griffin Campus, works to improve delivery of science-based information to stake-holder groups, urban county agent program planning and training, professional proficiency certification, on-line educational programs and support, regional educational programs and related grant management.

Research and education information, publications and programs are available from all departments of the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

Georgia Mountain Research and Education Center

The Georgia Mountain Research and Education Center in Blairsville covers 415 acres of orchards, test plots, pasture land, specimen and preservation gardens, historic sites and forests. The center is used by UGA faculty to conduct ongoing research and education projects. In addition, the Community Council of the GMREC provides monthly adult education programs as well as seasonal field experiences for children and youth in the Fannin/Union/Towns county area.

Research and Education Garden

The Research and Education Garden on the UGA Griffin Campus develops, evaluates and delivers research-based information and practices for southern landscapes. Visitors are welcome on weekdays (except holidays) from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. (May through September).

Vidalia Onion and Vegetable Research Center

The Vidalia Onion and Vegetable Research Center is located between Reidsville and Lyons in Toombs County. The center provides researchers and staff with land to conduct studies and educational demonstrations. The center was established in 1999 primarily to provide research on Vidalia onions. Researchers also conduct fertility studies and variety trials, too, in corn, squash, cucumbers and pumpkins. Blackberries, strawberries, carrots, Brassica crops, garlic, shallots and artichokes have also been studied here, along with no-till and organic vegetable production and composting demonstrations.
